概要
今回もレッスンで印象に残った表現を3つ紹介します。どれも日常英会話で使えるだけでなく、考え方を深めるきっかけにもなるフレーズです。
It’s not the winning but the taking part that counts.
（「勝つことではなく、参加することが大切だ」）
- 模範解答 Parents often say this because they want their children to enjoy sports without worrying too much about winning. （親がよくこう言うのは、子どもたちに勝ち負けを気にせずスポーツを楽しんでほしいからです）
- 学習ポイント 「count」は「数える」以外に「重要である」という意味。 「勝つことより参加が大切」という考えを表現できます。
- It’s the effort that counts.（努力が大事だ）
- Every vote counts.（すべての票が大切だ）
- What really counts is honesty.（本当に大切なのは誠実さだ）
挑戦や努力の価値を強調するときに便利な表現です。
He painted the house himself. / He painted the house by himself.
（「彼がその家を自分で塗った」／「彼が一人で塗った」）
- 模範解答 The difference is that himself emphasizes it was he (and not someone else), while by himself means he did it alone, without help. （違いは、himself は「他の誰でもなく彼がやった」ことを強調し、by himself は「彼が一人で助けなしにやった」という意味です）
- 学習ポイント 「himself」は「他の人ではなく本人が」「強調代名詞」。 「by himself」は「一人で」「助けなしに」の意味。
- I cooked the dinner myself.（夕食は私が作った＝他の人ではなく私）
- She went to the party by herself.（彼女は一人でパーティーに行った）
- The door shut by itself.（ドアが自動で閉まった）
ニュアンスの違いで、会話の正確さが大きく変わります。

（「新聞によれば…」）
- 模範解答 According to the newspapers, life has been discovered on another planet. （新聞によれば、別の惑星で生命が発見されたそうです）
- 学習ポイント 「according to ～」は「～によれば／～に従って」という意味。 情報源や根拠を示すときに便利です。
- According to my friend, the restaurant is great.（友人によれば、そのレストランは最高らしい）
- According to the rules, we must wear helmets.（規則によれば、ヘルメットを着用しなければならない）
- According to scientists, the climate is changing.（科学者によれば、気候は変化している）
意見ではなく「情報源」を強調したいときに役立ちます。
